Welcome to our warm, woody home! Originally conceived as a mid-century abode, our home has evolved based on our needs (smart home gadgets) and interests (thrifted furniture and art). By keeping built-ins minimal, we managed to keep our reno costs low (under 30k)! Notwithstanding the potential dust accumulation, having display shelves was a must for us as we wanted a place to display our pieces which we had accumulated over the years. Many of these items were collected on our overseas travels and hold a special meaning for us. At the bottom of our shelves is our dry pantry, featuring a His corner (coffee) and a Her corner (tea / matcha) 😆 For our living area, it was essential to minimise built-in furniture as we wanted this to be a space that evolved as we grew. Our TV console and coffee table are both from Carousell - lots and lots of scrolling involved, but if you find a nice item at a good bargain, it’s so much more special than buying from Taobao! To elongate our living space, we chose a wool-jute rug from Finnish Design Store which we felt would complement the green tones in our dining area. For our curtains, we chose full-length day curtains in a linen, semi-translucent fabric. This keeps our living room looking cozy yet airy, and complements our mood lighting pieces well. Another picture to illustrate how the natural light falls on a sunny day. Function over form - we originally intended for this round table from Taobao be to be our coffee table, but decided against it as the legs were a little unsteady. Instead we’ve decided to convert it into a side table - parked against the wall, the unsteadiness is less of an issue. When it comes to Taobao, our advice is to not stinge and get the best material (in this case, black walnut wood or 黑胡桃木). We have a relatively spacious balcony, and we wanted to make the best use of it instead of just using it to hang our clothes etc. IKEA was our best friend - we bought an outdoor table so that we could have meals outdoors in the evenings, and two Hyllis shelves for our growing plant family. For storage, we use Hay foldable crates - these are compact, waterproof and aesthetic! The one in the photo was from Carousell, but you can easily buy them off Shopee or Lazada as well. For our dining area, our ID suggested green lime washed walls and a wall lamp for a cafe-like vibe. We also opted to frame the glass window (an original part of the house) with wooden laminate for a more cohesive vibe. Most of the furniture and lamps here are from Taobao, with the exception of our dining table (from Journey East) and chairs (from Carousell). For our room corridor, our ID recommended a unique lamp from Taobao which we really love! For our bedroom, we went with our ID’s suggestion of a dual tone design for a more vintage look and we love how it looks! Our wooden Venetian blinds and bedside tables / lamps are from Taobao, and have been holding up well so far. For our bathrooms, we kept to the original design and only added a few personal touches - diffusers, soap etc. - for a more luxe feel.
