Hello and welcome back to our kitchen! Today we will show you a glimpse at what we have in this space, and how we organize them to make it clutter free yet practical for daily use. Let’s be honest here, all the minimalist barely there showroom kitchens are mostly meant for showrooms! Unless you don’t cook at all, eat out all the time and perhaps don’t even make drinks at home, then maybe those kitchens might be for you. 😂 In this post, we will share what items we have in this small and open kitchen of ours, and how we store them to suit our lifestyles. A quick recap of our kitchen layout here - we hacked down the wall and transformed the kitchen into a U shaped, open concept kitchen. Our huge refrigerator takes up right hand side of the kitchen, and we intentionally chose not to have any built-in cabinets above the fridge so as to create space for light and air flow from the side window. First up on our countertop, you will find our wooden chopping boards and knives set. Chopping boards are used relatively frequently for cutting fruits or just serving as additional support so we left them on the table top as part of the kitchen decor. We also left the knives set in their stand and left them side by side with the chopping boards. We find that storing these knives in the drawers, together with the cutleries may not be the best idea due to the sharp edges. Thus we left them on the table in this clear plastic stand. Next, we have our little coffee corner where we organized our Nespresso capsules in this stand which is the perfect holder for these little pots of goodness 😍 The stand is slim and can hold up to 40 capsules, perfect for coffee lovers. For the floating shelves, we placed decorative items such as small plants, candles, and pretty glassware or ceramics dining ware to add a personal touch to otherwise a very functional space. Not all decorative items are suitable in the kitchen, so we definitely played trial and error to see what works. We like to change things up once in a while so having this creative space allows Mrs to express her innovation and display her favourite homeware. 🥰 We left the rice cooker and air fryer on the counter top as these are the most used items in our household. To ensure that it is not messy, we make sure we wound up the wires and place them nicely behind/ beside the appliances. Moving on to the drawers, our cutleries are organized in the cutlery holder we got from IKEA. This is a no-brainer and makes looking for these utensils so much easier. The second drawer is used for storing our glasses, mugs and cups, including coasters and pot holders. This layer of drawer is easily accessible without the need to bend our back thus we chose to keep these glasses here for easy retrieval. The lowest bottom level of drawer is meant for the tea and coffee beverages, coffee capsules extras, baking paper, ziplock bags, cling wrap. These items are maybe bulky and tall in height (think a roll of baking paper) so choosing to store them in this last drawer is perfect as this means we can place them vertically for ease of identification 🤓! Above the coffee corner, we have a 2-layer wide cabinet storage. We kept our plates and bowls in the lower level, while we store the less-used items at the upper level. We don’t have a ton of plates and bowls so this space is more than adequate for our purpose. To make retrieval a little more convenient, we got this bamboo stand from IKEA and it works so nicely for us. For the heavier pots and pans, we placed them in the big drawer located below the built-in microwave. We got a pot stand from IKEA to help with the organization too. You may also find our table mats, kitchen gloves and a silicon chopping board (for meats) in this drawer. Storing similar items in the same area helps with locating them for sure. Our Blum condiments require a special mention here of course! We had to top up for this condiments drawer but honestly no regrets as it helps keep our condiments and the tubs and jars neatly and easy to access. The last section of our kitchen worth a mention is this 90degrees corner beside our washer. As there is no dedicated service yard in the kitchen, our washer/ dryer is located in our kitchen. Due to this reconfigured layout, we are faced with this challenging corner that makes utilization more difficult. This is the top down view of how the kitchen cabinets open up. We asked the ID to do up the inner partition such that we can fit in a laundry basket for our dirty clothes. And this is the how the laundry basket looks like, fitting inside our cabinet. we are so glad we found such an ingenious solution to leverage this hard-to-reach corner and keeping the dirty laundry hidden. The close proximity of the laundry bag to the washer also means convenience for laundry days.
