  • Every home has those key pieces that shape its character and bring comfort into daily life. For us, some of our best purchases were about style and the stories behind them. One standout is our 3-seater Muji floor sofa — a cosy supplement to our main sofa that offers guests a comfortable spot to chill and occasionally doubles as a bed for quick naps. We realized we could save around $100 by buying it across the border in JB, so we made 2 trips — first to place the order and then to bring it back. On the second trip, we struggled to fit it into our parents’ car, as it was almost too big. It took sheer determination and a lot of perseverance, but we made it work! (Funny story: Just one month later, we saw it on sale on Shopee for even less than what we paid in JB hahaha.)
  • Another meaningful addition to our home is our custom TV console. Conceptualizing it together has added depth to our space and turned it into a meaningful conversation piece. Though it is 90% empty (what do people even store in TV consoles these days?) , it holds immense value because it is not just a piece of furniture, but a part of our story. Through this process, we also discovered our appreciation for oriental design, something we had not realized until we saw it take shape. Special mention goes to our Sonos sound system (Arc + 2 Era 300 + Sub), which has truly elevated our home experience. Whether it’s providing background music when we host or delivering immersive sound during movie nights, it adds a layer of atmosphere that we now can’t live without.
  • One of our most value-for-money buys has to be our sofa from Milan Furniture in JB! We were so impressed by the quality and affordability during our first visit that we placed our order right away. This sofa, with its adjustable headrest and full leather covering, also includes the inclining function on all three seats, which we specifically requested. We paid around $2,500, including GST, delivery, and assembly—a real steal considering similar sofas in local showrooms could easily go for $5,000 or more! Milan Furniture was recommended by our relatives in Malaysia, who purchased their sofa from there over 10 years ago. We visited the Johor Jaya outlet, which is only about 30 minutes from the causeway, making it very accessible. The staff there were also incredibly friendly and helpful, making the entire process smooth and enjoyable.
  • Lastly, one of the most important purchases in the house is none other than electrical sockets! it was an expensive decision to rewire the house + double down on the number of electrical points, but 10 months on we're ever so thankful that we did that. We have a grand total of 26 double sockets around the house - 3 in each bedroom, 5 in the kitchen + yard, and 12 in the living room. Sounds excessive, but so far it's been proving to be extremely worth the money. All in all, these purchases have made our home feel more functional, comfortable, and uniquely ours. Each one serves its purpose, and we’re glad we made those decisions, no matter how big or small.
