Step into our Japandi-theme dining area! As our home is a 4 Room BTO flat, there isn’t really much space! Hence, our dining table area is right at the entrance! To give ourselves some privacy, we have installed a full height entrance foyer cabinet here. If you are also thinking of designing such a cabinet for your home too, do take note that as laminates are required on both sides of the cabinet (as compared to only one side if the cabinet is against the wall typically), the cost will be higher. The sintered stone table and wooden bench/chairs are the centrepiece in the dining area, representing the natural materials and minimalist design typical of both Japanese and Scandinavian styles. We had sourced high and low before we finally found a sintered stone table that we like that matches the Japandi theme! We wanted a sintered stone material for easy maintenance and cleaning. The dining table came with matching chairs too! We were particularly looking out for dining tables which had its 4 legs only at the corners, as we did not like the feeling of legs kicking the dining table legs accidentally. In order to accommodate more people at the dining table during family gatherings, we got a long bench for the other side of the dining table! This was the side that is against the full height cabinet too, hence we can actually lean our back against it. Continuing the Japandi theme in the dining area, we specifically handpicked a pendant light that comes with matching white wood tone! Being practical, we did not want a hanging dining light that required replacement of the whole light should it spoil. Thus, we were only on the look out for pendant lights that are using light bulbs for easy replacement if the need arises in future. We had also designed a special compartment at the entrance foyer cabinet, that can only be accessed from the back from the dining area (while the other parts of the cabinet are all accessible from the entrance area). This area is useful to keep items such as board games / card games for entertaining our guests, and also to store items like instruction manual booklets that are important, but not used daily. We installed electrical plugs here which is super useful for steamboat gatherings, and it can also double up as a work station! We enjoy having our meals here! Our favourite place in the house! When designing our house, we specially catered for a fan for the dining area. While having a fan might destroy the aesthetic look of the house, we were being very practical as the Singapore weather is too hot! Having a ceiling/corner fan was also better than using a standing fan in future. We had specially considered not to have a ceiling light with fan for the dining table area due to feng shui guidelines. Stay tuned for more amazing insights and ideas next week!
