Here’s how we set up spaces and organise things for our young children. Our girls are 3 and 5 now, but I’ve included our setups from 1 year old onwards so you have more options and ideas! For every space we simply place things at their height and observe how they use the space before adapting it to their needs. For example, in our Entryway, we place hooks at their height for their items and give them the lower shelves in our shoe cabinet. In the kitchen, the girls have a dedicated drawer with their cutlery and bowls. We selected a drawer at their height so they could help set the table and help themselves to what they need. The girls also have cleaning tools in the kitchen for them to help out with cleaning. We’ve started since 1 and it’s gone a long way to get them helping around the home! In the Bathroom, we keep everything off the floor with an adhesive shelf for soap, a toy bin and also a play table. The table is great for play during bath time and also makes a great surface for washable paint! Just hose everything down when you’re done! At age 1, for a wardrobe we used a small shelf with a tension rod as a wardrobe. We had to remove one shelf and cut the peg on this IKEA kallax shelf. We rotated it and also anchored it to the wall for safety. We used 3M Command strips everywhere since we knew that things would change quickly as the girls got older. This shelf is a Command Picture Ledge and all hooks are command hooks. We also used command strips for the mirrors and pieced 3 together to form a toddler full height mirror. In another version of our kids’ wardrobes, we used the same tension rod against a wall and dresser. The dresser holds the folded clothes and bedsheets. The lowest drawers are divided for all the things they need and the girls know exactly how to sort their laundry and take what they need. Check out my Kids Room and Play room posts for more details on the individual rooms! Our main play area is in our living room. We’ve used a low shelf and our TV console to organise toys. Check out my Living Room post if you want to see how we organise our art and craft corner, music and play corner in the living room!
