  • Welcome back to our humble abode at Trunks and Trees! Today, we are sharing about the heart of our home: the dining room. As we do enjoy hosting family and friends, it was a deliberate choice to have the dining room greet our guests as the first room of the house just like what you see in our cover photo here. Let's zoom into more details of our dining area below!
  • Considering how to add character to your dining room? Using shapes and partitions like us could help! Having chosen our dining table before renovation started, our ID Joyce from Cheng Yi Interior Design was able to ensure that the recessed arch in the wall could nicely frame our dining able in terms of length. This was also part of our design to cover up the odd angles that some concrete walls created in this space. In terms of lighting, it certainly would have been nice to have pendant lights over our dining table but we prioritised having a ceiling fan to ensure that we were seated comfortably in this area, especially since our air conditioner was situated in the living room. KDK Airy was therefore our choice since its white body matched with our ceilings well.
  • Got several items you have on your dining table? Consider using a tray to group them together! It is not only more pleasing to the eye but also easy to transport them across and away from the table. While we decided to match our tray from Nitori to the colour of our table, a neutral colour like cream or white would have been good too!
  • Buy a dining set or hunt for tables and chairs separately? For us, we bought our dining tables and chairs separately but admit that it was challenging to match them well. This was layered with the necessity to sit on the chairs to test them out by Mr T which ruled out online options. After weeks of visiting various furniture shops, we settled on our Mindi Beach Wood Greywashed Morgan chairs from BOO furniture which turned out to be a wonderful pairing for our Deyanira Table from Nook & Cranny.
  • Up-close, you can see more of the grey wash in the grains of our wooden chair. We love how the shade of grey helps to match the chairs nicely to the rest of our house, especially the floors in the living room and feature lime washed wall.
  • Day curtains were our first choice for the dining room! This is also in line with the window treatments in our living room to create consistency throughout the space. We love how sunlight filters beautifully through the curtains, especially during sunset!
  • To breathe a bit more life into our dining room, consider greenery! For us, we were keen to have a fuss-free plant situation and thus opted for a 1.8m faux plant. That said, real plants are definitely preferred to create a more authentic and genuine look of nature.
  • Empty walls in the dining room can also be beautified with a painting or two! For us, we chose to go with the talented Zian at Reprezian who commissioned this painting for us. It was based on our favourite movie Fantastic Mr Fox which Zian was able to design with the colours of our home in mind. We really love this piece very much and feel that it adds much character to our dining space. For those who are looking for artwork in their living room, it'll be great to start off with things that represent your home or what you like! Doing DIY paintings is also a more affordable option which does not break the bank. (:
  • Having always dreamt of incorporating niches into our home, this partition wall with carpentry was designed by our ID Joyce to create a unique space on this side of our dining room. Similar to open shelving, such a space allows for not only memorabilia to be displayed, but also allows for changes to be made during festive seasons such that one's home never feels boring or monotonous!
  • Here's a sneak of what we have stored in the cabinets! We do enjoy board games, especially Mr T, so having them situated in the dining area allows for easy access to them.
  • Not enough chairs for your living room like us? Foldable chairs and stools are here to the rescue! We keep these portable seats in our bomb shelter which are brought to light when in need. Can you also spot our mahjong table? Having some space in your dining / living area for additional tables will be an important consideration for those who need it too!
  • And that concludes the tour and thoughts behind the design of our dining room! We hope that it has inspired you to either spruce up your own dining room with decor or to help you consider the design and layout of your dining room before renovations. With that, take care and we will see you again in our next post! (: Signing off, Mr and Mrs T
